Project contact: Dr Kiran K Sharma (K.SHARMA@CGIAR.ORG)

Donor: Other international or regional organization,Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-Philippines

For purposes of this project, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) will be leading the consortium through its Agribusiness & Innovation Platform (AIP), with Optiserve Technologies Inc., as the local partner in the Philippines. The value chain mapping exercise and analysis is generally conducted by the AIP as part of its incubator outreach strategy and results are implemented at the ground level through the newly setup incubators. The approach to this study will therefore focus on implementing the lessons of the study and the VCMA framework by adopting an incubator platform. 4. Methodologies to be adopted for study • Desk research for secondary data collection • Preparation of survey questionnaire for interviews with farmers (including women), primary aggregators, processors, and other market players in the region • Mapping studies on value chain of existing crops in the region especially coconut and later, for newer intercrops suggested in the ToR and will include mapping from producers to markets and other intermediaries and enablers • Interviews and surveys with farmers, processors, market agencies for mapping of value chain of existing crops • Focus group discussions with farmers in different parts of Eastern Visayas for suggested crops in the ToR to understand socio-economic impact and suggestions on how to integrate it into existing scenario • Participatory dialogues will be held with industry associations, processors, chambers of commerce, financial institutions to understand operational bottlenecks and ways to resolve them • Suggest strategies and plan of action adopting a value-chain based incubator-model to address gaps in existing situation and as a platform to engage with different stakeholders to benefit smallholder farmers which will be presented as part of the VCMA framework • Data analysis on markets, cultivation practices, demand and supply, margin structures, and policies
