Improving productivity on smallholder farms that operate mostly with family labor at a low level of mechanization of farming activities can only happen when farmers have knowledge of better production technologies, and also have access to them in a timely and a financially viable manner. Adoption of the new technologies can be enhanced by providing farmers with reliable, predictable marketing opportunities for the target product, which here is pearl millet or sorghum grain. Several proven production technologies, including sustainable soil, water and resource management strategies, provided by Africa RISING’s research activities and by partner research institutions, are available for the target regions in Mali.
