With a view to improve crop productivity and farm-based livelihoods, the State Government of Andhra Pradesh has embarked on implementing the flagship initiative, Bhoochetana, in a phased manner. The overall goal of the project is to increase average productivity of target crops in the selected districts of Andhra Pradesh by 25% in five years and identify suitable adaptation strategies for coping with the likely changes associated with climate change.
The initiative has adopted a consortium approach – led by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and with the Department of Agriculture (DoA) acting as the nodal agency for implementation. Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) Hyderabad; district administration and district watershed management agency (DWMA) are the other important consortium partners.
